階級方言

 

 では、デクスターの処女作の一部を読んでみよう。舞台はオックスフォードからウッドストックへ向かう道路ぞいのThe Black Prince。 ゲイはこの由緒あるパブで働く女性である。

    “・We'd all like the same again, please.Three gins and tonics.”

    Gaye looked at him with interest. The landlord had once told her that if anyone ordered‘gins and tonics' instead of the almost universal ‘gin and tonics'―he really was a don.

    ゲイはおやという顔をして彼を見た。ふつうはほとん

    どの人が“gin and tonics”と注文するが、もしもだれかが“gins and tonics” といえば、その人はオックスフォードの教授なんだとマネージャーに聞いたことがあった)

 ここでは2つの事実が指摘されている。まずgin andtonicsがふつうの複数形であり、加えてgins and tonicsは大学の教授が用いる形式であると。 gins and tonicsはただの気まぐれではなくて、一種の職業方言、ないしは階級方言という事実である。

 次に引用するデクスターのその後の作品にも、gins andtonics (よ説明ぬきで用いられている。第1作を読んだ読者にはあらためて解説の必要がないからである。

  He was very fond of dry sherry.

(7)ではgins-and-tonicsとハイフンつきであるが、発音自体はgins and tonics と変わらない。(6)の「彼」

(7)の「彼女」がどのような人物かはすでに明らかであろう。

 小説のなかの記述は必ずしも事実を反映するとはかぎらない。 しかし、それを承知の上で、(5)で述べられているgm and tonicsとgins and tonicsのもつ相違を頭の片隅にでもおいておこう。オックスフォードを訪れる機会があれば、由緒あるパブに立ちよって、注文してみたいものだ。どんな反応が返ってくるだろうか。
